About the artist
Splitscreen Innovations was founded in 2005 by Steve Moss, after jacking in his career as a Mechanical Engineer, designing bus and fire engine chassis for Dennis. Tempted away from the 9 to 5 by thoughts of freedom – surfing, camping, wakeboarding, and barbecuing, while taking pictures of whatever he damn well wanted, sounded like the perfect life. However, some summers he pretty much lived in his van. His brother reminisces about the old days and says it was like being on tour. Rock n roll – but without the groupies, drugs, or the money, hanging out with crusties driving barely road-worthy vehicles. From the beginning, Steve’s drive, passion, and enthusiasm, combined with his creativity, skills, and experience held him in good stead for the future. His ideas, for the most part, came to fruition – he never went anywhere without his camera, and he would be able to photograph practically anything and turn it into a work of art. Back then, he was well ahead of his time, with his inventive style, using techniques many had yet to discover – some of his early works are still best sellers. That’s not to say it wasn’t hard work. He never switched off. If he wasn’t working, he was thinking about work and his next project. His work never stagnated and fell by the wayside. As soon as the 3d printer was launched he toddled off to buy one and was up and running with his new creations straight away without breaking a sweat, thanks to the CAD skills acquired in his formative engineering days. He made it all look so easy.
He quickly developed a reputation and a following as a professional photographer on the VW scene and beyond. In fact, Volkswagen themselves have a collection of Steve’s artwork decorating some of their boardrooms.
Splitscreen Innovations has been operating at various locations in Camden Town NW1 since 2006, exhibiting at national and international events and, of course, trading at the usual annual shows, as well as wholesaling to select retailers around the UK and further afield.
Steve and his work have been featured in various publications over the years; Hayburner, Just Kampers, Volkswagen Camper & Commercial, and Mike Harding’s ‘The VW Camper: A Biography’, to name a few. The VW show organisers at Dubs at the Park and the Kent VW Festival award the winners of the competition categories at the end of the show with trophies dedicated to Steve’s memory.
This is a 12 year collection, which has involved a huge amount of work, not to mention blood, sweat, and tears. We miss you, Steve.
